Hola! Welcome to Buenos Aires!
Of all the Latin American cities, Buenos Aires has the most European ambience. The city's green parks, stately buildings, Buenos Aires hotels, wide tree-lined streets, the diverse culture and nightlife all add up to remind one of Barcelona or Paris. The residents of the city, called porteños or ‘people of the port', are very European too. Of European origin, most have descended from Italian immigrants and Spanish founders of the nineteenth century. The cuisine and culture of the people are reminiscent of their forefathers and can be experienced in the many museums, theatres, art galleries and restaurants. Buenos Aires has its own art forms, too, the tango being its most well-known dance style.
Some of the most popular things to do in Buenos Aires are to watch a passionate game of fútbol (soccer), take a few tango lessons and dig into a juicy steak.
The layout of the city is as diverse as its culture. With no single dominating structure, Buenos Aires is a colourful collage of little events, small places and romantic interactions, each with its unique shape, colour and character. Victorian houses from the nineteenth century and elegant Buenos Aires hotels rub shoulders with glass-covered skyscrapers, while dusty antique shops with untold treasures face tango bars that are swathed in sharp smelling cigar smoke.
The neighbourhoods of Buenos Aires are small and each has its own unique colour and structure and things to see and do. Spanish colonial designs blend gracefully with Italian detailing and classical French architecture in the cosmopolitan San Telmo district. The La Boca district stands apart with its colourful pressed tin houses and side streets that have been turned into avenues of colour by muralists and is a great place to explore on a Buenos Aires tour.
In the midst of all the diversity, the spirit of Argentina pervades all of Buenos Aires. The tango is the national dance of the country and it embodies the true spirit of the nation. It can be seen everywhere, in ballrooms, dance halls, open plazas and even parks. The tango embodies both passion and elegance; it is a dance of intimacy and rhythm. Culturally, Buenos Aires has a lot more to offer in addition to the tango. Ballet, classical music, opera, theatre and cinema are all part of its rich cultural life. Large cultural centres offer a host of options such as art exhibitions and concerts - and free tango lessons as well.
Buenos Aires has been a source of inspiration for many poets, playwrights and writers. ‘Fervor de Buenos Aires' (1923), the first book of well known poet and short story writer Jorge Luis Borges, is a collection of poems about Buenos Aires. He refers to the La Recoleta Cemetery in the book and ‘El Aleph', the most well known short story written by Borges, is based in the Constitucion area. Borges wrote his first book after returning home from Europe.
This lively and energetic city was set up by Europeans and is today home to the attractive porteños. The local food is fresh and inviting, the shopping in Buenos Aires is a delight with a lot of variety, and the nightlife is invigorating and unending. The city is also extremely affordable and there are a number of great value hotels in Buenos Aires. Many of these Buenos Aires hotels have facilities and amenities you'd pay a lot more for anywhere else.
Explore the well off neighbourhoods of Recoleta and visit its famous necropolis. Find an antique gem in the dusty shops of San Telmo and visit the barrio's (neighbourhood) wildly popular weekend fair. For a taste of the bohemian lifestyle, take a Buenos Aires tour of the streets of Boedo. Catch a theatrical production in one of the many theatres around Av Corrientes or join the Sunday crowd around the green parks of Palermo on your roller blades.
